Author, Happiness is Down Syndrome. As I sat down to write Happiness is Down Syndrome, I realized there was a gaping hole in the middle of the book. There were plenty of parents’ voices, as well as those of experts, doctors and specialists. But what I needed most were the lived experiences of self-advocates. I dedicated an entire chapter to the stories of some of my dearest friends in the Down syndrome community. In keeping with that theme, I’m kicking off my blog with a tremendously talented artist who happens to be featured in the Self-Advocate chapter of Happiness is Down Syndrome.

Mia Noelle Rodriguez is a 16-year-old singer, actress, and self-advocate using her voice to break barriers and celebrate the beauty of difference. Born with Down syndrome, Mia is redefining what’s possible—on stage, on screen, and in life.


With bold vocals and fearless authenticity, Mia has performed at iconic venues like Madison Square Garden, the Little League World Series, and the Naumburg Bandshell in New York City’s Central Park. She has also graced the stages of Broadway cabarets and performance spaces known for featuring both rising talent and established performers from the New York theater scene.


She starred in the global campaign No Decisions Without Us, and proudly partners with organizations like the National Down Syndrome Society, GiGi’s Playhouse, and Hearts of Joy International; each aligned with her mission to elevate voices with disabilities and promote inclusion through action.


From musicals to advocacy to dreaming of a future in music and fashion, Mia is here to remind the world: inclusion is powerful, and every voice matters.


In Misty’s book, Mia says, “I love my life! I am a teenager with Down syndrome, and advocating is a big part of who I am because my future belongs to me.”
